KJV : Follow after charity, and desire spiritual [gifts,] but rather that ye may prophesy.
YLT : Pursue the love, and seek earnestly the spiritual things, and rather that ye may prophecy,
RV : Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual {cf15i gifts}, but rather that ye may prophesy.
RSV : Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
ASV : Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
ESV : Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
ERVEN : Love should be the goal of your life, but you should also want to have the gifts that come from the Spirit. And the gift you should want most is to be able to prophesy.

KJV : For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him;] howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
YLT : for he who is speaking in an [unknown] tongue -- to men he doth not speak, but to God, for no one doth hearken, and in spirit he doth speak secrets;
RV : For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
RSV : For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
ASV : For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
ESV : For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
ERVEN : I will explain why. Those who have the gift of speaking in a different language are not speaking to people. They are speaking to God. No one understands them—they are speaking secret things through the Spirit.
3
KJV : But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
YLT : and he who is prophesying to men doth speak edification, and exhortation, and comfort;
RV : But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and comfort, and consolation.
RSV : On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
ASV : But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.
ESV : On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.
ERVEN : But those who prophesy are speaking to people. They help people grow stronger in faith, and they give encouragement and comfort.
4
KJV : He that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
YLT : he who is speaking in an [unknown] tongue, himself doth edify, and he who is prophesying, an assembly doth edify;
RV : He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
RSV : He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
ASV : He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
ESV : The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
ERVEN : Those who speak in a different language are helping only themselves. But those who prophesy are helping the whole church.
5
KJV : I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater [is] he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
YLT : and I wish you all to speak with tongues, and more that ye may prophecy, for greater is he who is prophesying than he who is speaking with tongues, except one may interpret, that the assembly may receive edification.
RV : Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
RSV : Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified.
ASV : Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
ESV : Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
ERVEN : I would like all of you to have the gift of speaking in different languages. But what I want more is for you to prophesy. Anyone who prophesies is more important than those who can only speak in different languages. However, if they can also interpret those languages, they are as important as the one who prophesies. If they can interpret, then the church can be helped by what they say.

KJV : Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
YLT : And now, brethren, if I may come unto you speaking tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either in revelation, or in knowledge, or in prophesying, or in teaching?
RV : But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?
RSV : Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how shall I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
ASV : But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?
ESV : Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
ERVEN : Brothers and sisters, will it help you if I come to you speaking in different languages? No, it will help you only if I bring you a new truth or some knowledge, prophecy, or teaching.

KJV : And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
YLT : yet the things without life giving sound -- whether pipe or harp -- if a difference in the sounds they may not give, how shall be known that which is piped or that which is harped?
RV : Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
RSV : If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will any one know what is played?
ASV : Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
ESV : If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?
ERVEN : This is true even with lifeless things that make sounds—like a flute or a harp. If the different musical notes are not made clear, you can't understand what song is being played. Each note must be played clearly for you to be able to understand the tune.
8
KJV : For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
YLT : for if also an uncertain sound a trumpet may give, who shall prepare himself for battle?
RV : For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war?
RSV : And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?
ASV : For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war?
ESV : And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?
ERVEN : And in a war, if the trumpet does not sound clearly, the soldiers will not know it is time to prepare for fighting.
9
KJV : So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
YLT : so also ye, if through the tongue, speech easily understood ye may not give -- how shall that which is spoken be known? for ye shall be speaking to air.
RV : So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air.
RSV : So with yourselves; if you in a tongue utter speech that is not intelligible, how will any one know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.
ASV : So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air.
ESV : So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.
ERVEN : It is the same with you. If you don't speak clearly in a language people know, they cannot understand what you are saying. You will be talking to the air!
10

ERVEN : It is true that there are many different languages in the world, and they all have meaning.
11
KJV : Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh [shall be] a barbarian unto me.
YLT : if, then, I do not know the power of the voice, I shall be to him who is speaking a foreigner, and he who is speaking, is to me a foreigner;
RV : If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.
RSV : but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
ASV : If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.
ESV : but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
ERVEN : But if I don't understand the meaning of what someone is saying, it will just be strange sounds to me, and I will sound just as strange to them.
12
KJV : Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual [gifts,] seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
YLT : so also ye, since ye are earnestly desirous of spiritual gifts, for the building up of the assembly seek that ye may abound;
RV : So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual {cf15i gifts}, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.
RSV : So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
ASV : So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.
ESV : So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
ERVEN : That's why you who want spiritual gifts so much should prefer those gifts that help the church grow stronger.
13
KJV : Wherefore let him that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue pray that he may interpret.
YLT : wherefore he who is speaking in an [unknown] tongue -- let him pray that he may interpret;
RV : Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
RSV : Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.
ASV : Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.
ESV : Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.
ERVEN : So those who have the gift of speaking in a different language should pray that they can also interpret what they say.
14
KJV : For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

ESV : For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
ERVEN : If I pray in a different language, my spirit is praying, but my mind does nothing.
15
KJV : What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
YLT : What then is it? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray also with the understanding; I will sing psalms with the spirit, and I will sing psalms also with the understanding;
RV : What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
RSV : What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
ASV : What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
ESV : What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.
ERVEN : So what should I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
16
KJV : Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
YLT : since, if thou mayest bless with the spirit, he who is filling the place of the unlearned, how shall he say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, since what thou dost say he hath not known?
RV : Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?
RSV : Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how can any one in the position of an outsider say the "Amen" to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?
ASV : Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?
ESV : Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say "Amen" to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?
ERVEN : You might be praising God with your spirit. But someone there without understanding cannot say "Amen " to your prayer of thanks, because they don't know what you are saying.
17
KJV : For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
YLT : for thou, indeed, dost give thanks well, but the other is not built up!
RV : For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
RSV : For you may give thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
ASV : For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
ESV : For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up.
ERVEN : You may be thanking God in a good way, but others are not helped.
18
KJV : I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
YLT : I give thanks to my God -- more than you all with tongues speaking --
RV : I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:
RSV : I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all;
ASV : I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:
ESV : I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
ERVEN : I thank God that my gift of speaking in different kinds of languages is greater than any of yours.
19
KJV : Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that [by my voice] I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an [unknown] tongue.
YLT : but in an assembly I wish to speak five words through my understanding, that others also I may instruct, rather than myriads of words in an [unknown] tongue.
RV : howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
RSV : nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
ASV : howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
ESV : Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
ERVEN : But in the church meetings I would rather speak five words that I understand than thousands of words in a different language. I would rather speak with my understanding, so that I can teach others.
20
KJV : Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
YLT : Brethren, become not children in the understanding, but in the evil be ye babes, and in the understanding become ye perfect;
RV : Brethren, be not children in mind: howbeit in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.
RSV : Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; be babes in evil, but in thinking be mature.
ASV : Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.
ESV : Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.
ERVEN : Brothers and sisters, don't think like children. In evil things be like babies, but in your thinking you should be like fullgrown adults.
21
KJV : In the law it is written, With [men of] other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
YLT : in the law it hath been written, that, `With other tongues and with other lips I will speak to this people, and not even so will they hear Me, saith the Lord;`
RV : In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.
RSV : In the law it is written, "By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord."
ASV : In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.
ESV : In the Law it is written, "By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord."
ERVEN : As the Scriptures say, "Using those who speak a different language and using the lips of foreigners, I will speak to these people. But even then, they will not obey me." This is what the Lord says.
22
KJV : Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying [serveth] not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
YLT : so that the tongues are for a sign, not to the believing, but to the unbelieving; and the prophesy [is] not for the unbelieving, but for the believing,
RV : Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying {cf15i is for a sign}, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.
RSV : Thus, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers.
ASV : Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.
ESV : Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
ERVEN : And from this we see that the use of different languages shows how God deals with those who don't believe, not with those who believe. And prophecy shows how God works through those who believe, not through unbelievers.
23
KJV : If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in [those that are] unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
YLT : If, therefore, the whole assembly may come together, to the same place, and all may speak with tongues, and there may come in unlearned or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
RV : If therefore the whole church be assembled together, and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?
RSV : If, therefore, the whole church assembles and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?
ASV : If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?
ESV : If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds?
ERVEN : Suppose the whole church meets together and you all speak in different languages. If some people come in who are without understanding or don't believe, they will say you are crazy.
24
KJV : But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or [one] unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
YLT : and if all may prophecy, and any one may come in, an unbeliever or unlearned, he is convicted by all, he is discerned by all,
RV : But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;
RSV : But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all,
ASV : But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;
ESV : But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all,
ERVEN : But suppose you are all prophesying and someone comes in who does not believe or who is without understanding. Their sin will be shown to them, and they will be judged by everything you say.
25
KJV : And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on [his] face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
YLT : and so the secrets of his heart become manifest, and so having fallen upon [his] face, he will bow before God, declaring that God really is among you.
RV : the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
RSV : the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
ASV : the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
ESV : the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
ERVEN : The secret things in their heart will be made known. So they will bow down and worship God. They will say, "Without a doubt, God is here with you."
