KJV : Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
YLT : Are ye ignorant, brethren -- for to those knowing law I speak -- that the law hath lordship over the man as long as he liveth?
RV : Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men that know the law), how that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?
RSV : Do you not know, brethren -- for I am speaking to those who know the law -- that the law is binding on a person only during his life?
ASV : Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?
ESV : Or do you not know, brothers- for I am speaking to those who know the law- that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?
ERVEN : Brothers and sisters, you all understand the Law of Moses. So surely you know that the law rules over people only while they are alive.

KJV : For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to [her] husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of [her] husband.
YLT : for the married woman to the living husband hath been bound by law, and if the husband may die, she hath been free from the law of the husband;
RV : For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.
RSV : Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives; but if her husband dies she is discharged from the law concerning the husband.
ASV : For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.
ESV : Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.
ERVEN : It's like what the law says about marriage: A woman must stay married to her husband as long as he is alive. But if her husband dies, she is made free from the law of marriage.
3
KJV : So then if, while [her] husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
YLT : so, then, the husband being alive, an adulteress she shall be called if she may become another man`s; and if the husband may die, she is free from the law, so as not to be an adulteress, having become another man`s.
RV : So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.
RSV : Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
ASV : So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.
ESV : Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.
ERVEN : But if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, the law says she is guilty of adultery. But if her husband dies, she is made free from the law of marriage. So if she marries another man after her husband dies, she is not guilty of adultery.

KJV : Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, [even] to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
YLT : So that, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of the Christ, for your becoming another`s, who out of the dead was raised up, that we might bear fruit to God;
RV : Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, {cf15i even} to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.
RSV : Likewise, my brethren, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.
ASV : Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.
ESV : Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.
ERVEN : In the same way, my brothers and sisters, your old selves died and you became free from the law through the body of Christ. Now you belong to someone else. You belong to the one who was raised from death. We belong to Christ so that we can be used in service to God.

KJV : For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
YLT : for when we were in the flesh, the passions of the sins, that [are] through the law, were working in our members, to bear fruit to the death;
RV : For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
RSV : While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.
ASV : For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
ESV : For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.
ERVEN : In the past we were ruled by our sinful selves. The law made us want to do sinful things. And those sinful desires controlled our bodies, so that what we did only brought us spiritual death.
6
KJV : But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter.
YLT : and now we have ceased from the law, that being dead in which we were held, so that we may serve in newness of spirit, and not in oldness of letter.
RV : But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were holden; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.
RSV : But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.
ASV : But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.
ESV : But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.
ERVEN : In the past the law held us as prisoners, but our old selves died, and we were made free from the law. So now we serve God in a new way, not in the old way with the written rules. Now we serve God in the new way, with the Spirit.

KJV : What shall we say then? [Is] the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
YLT : What, then, shall we say? the law [is] sin? let it not be! but the sin I did not know except through law, for also the covetousness I had not known if the law had not said:
RV : What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:
RSV : What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I should not have known sin. I should not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall not covet."
ASV : What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:
ESV : What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, "You shall not covet."
ERVEN : You might think I am saying that sin and the law are the same. That is not true. But the law was the only way I could learn what sin means. I would never have known it is wrong to want something that is not mine. But the law said, "You must not want what belongs to someone else."
8
KJV : But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin [was] dead.
YLT : `Thou shalt not covet;` and the sin having received an opportunity, through the command, did work in me all covetousness -- for apart from law sin is dead.
RV : but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin {cf15i is} dead.
RSV : But sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, wrought in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead.
ASV : but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead.
ESV : But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead.
ERVEN : And sin found a way to use that command and make me want all kinds of things that weren't mine. So sin came to me because of the command. But without the law, sin has no power.
9

RSV : I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died;
ASV : And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;
ESV : I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.
ERVEN : Before I knew the law, I was alive. But when I heard the law's command, sin began to live,
10

KJV : And the commandment, which [was ordained] to life, I found [to be] unto death.
YLT : and the command that [is] for life, this was found by me for death;
RV : and the commandment, which {cf15i was} unto life, this I found {cf15i to be} unto death:
RSV : the very commandment which promised life proved to be death to me.
ASV : and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death:
ESV : The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.
ERVEN : and I died spiritually. The command was meant to bring life, but for me it brought death.
11
KJV : For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew [me. ]
YLT : for the sin, having received an opportunity, through the command, did deceive me, and through it did slay [me];
RV : for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.
RSV : For sin, finding opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and by it killed me.
ASV : for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.
ESV : For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
ERVEN : Sin found a way to fool me by using the command to make me die.
12
KJV : Wherefore the law [is] holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
YLT : so that the law, indeed, [is] holy, and the command holy, and righteous, and good.
RV : So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.
RSV : So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.
ASV : So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.
ESV : So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

KJV : Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
YLT : That which is good then, to me hath it become death? let it not be! but the sin, that it might appear sin, through the good, working death to me, that the sin might become exceeding sinful through the command,
RV : Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shewn to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.
RSV : Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, working death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.
ASV : Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.
ESV : Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.
ERVEN : Does this mean that something that is good brought death to me? No, it was sin that used the good command to bring me death. This shows how terrible sin really is. It can use a good command to produce a result that shows sin at its very worst.

RSV : So then it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me.
ASV : So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.
ESV : So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

KJV : For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but [how] to perform that which is good I find not.

ASV : but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.
ESV : but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
ERVEN : But I see another law working in my body. That law makes war against the law that my mind accepts. That other law working in my body is the law of sin, and that law makes me its prisoner.

ESV : Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
ERVEN : What a miserable person I am! Who will save me from this body that brings me death?
25
KJV : I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
