ASV : For what saith the scripture? And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness.
ESV : For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness."
ERVEN : That's why the Scriptures say, "Abraham believed God, and because of this faith he was accepted as one who is right with God."
4

RSV : Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as his due.
ASV : Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but as of debt.
ESV : Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.

5
KJV : But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
YLT : and to him who is not working, and is believing upon Him who is declaring righteous the impious, his faith is reckoned -- to righteousness:

ESV : And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
ERVEN : But people cannot do any work that will make them right with God. So they must trust in him. Then he accepts their faith, and that makes them right with him. He is the one who makes even evil people right.
6
KJV : Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
YLT : even as David also doth speak of the happiness of the man to whom God doth reckon righteousness apart from works:
RV : Even as David also pronounceth blessing upon the man, unto whom God reckoneth righteousness apart from works,
RSV : So also David pronounces a blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works:
ASV : Even as David also pronounceth blessing upon the man, unto whom God reckoneth righteousness apart from works,

ERVEN : David said the same thing when he was talking about the blessing people have when God accepts them as good without looking at what they have done:
7
KJV : [Saying,] Blessed [are] they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8

KJV : [Cometh] this blessedness then upon the circumcision [only,] or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
YLT : [Is] this happiness, then, upon the circumcision, or also upon the uncircumcision -- for we say that the faith was reckoned to Abraham -- to righteousness?
RV : Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say, To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness.
RSV : Is this blessing pronounced only upon the circumcised, or also upon the uncircumcised? We say that faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness.
ASV : Is this blessing then pronounced upon the circumcision, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say, To Abraham his faith was reckoned for righteousness.
ESV : Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

10
MOV : എങ്ങനെ കണക്കിട്ടതു?
KJV : How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
YLT : how then was it reckoned? he being in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision;
RV : How then was it reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision:
RSV : How then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised.
ASV : How then was it reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision:
ESV : How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised.
ERVEN : So how did this happen? Did God accept Abraham before or after he was circumcised? God accepted him before his circumcision.
11
KJV : And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which [he had yet] being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
YLT : and a sign he did receive of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith in the uncircumcision, for his being father of all those believing through uncircumcision, for the righteousness also being reckoned to them,
RV : and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned unto them;
RSV : He received circumcision as a sign or seal of the righteousness which he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have righteousness reckoned to them,
ASV : and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was in uncircumcision; that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be in uncircumcision, that righteousness might be reckoned unto them;
ESV : He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well,
ERVEN : Abraham was circumcised later to show that God accepted him. His circumcision was proof that he was right with God through faith before he was circumcised. So Abraham is the father of all those who believe but are not circumcised. They believe and are accepted as people who are right with God.
12
KJV : And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which [he had] being [yet] uncircumcised.
YLT : and father of circumcision to those not of circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of the faith, that [is] in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.
RV : and the father of circumcision to them who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had in uncircumcision.
RSV : and likewise the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but also follow the example of the faith which our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
ASV : and the father of circumcision to them who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had in uncircumcision.
ESV : and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
ERVEN : And Abraham is also the father of those who have been circumcised. But it is not their circumcision that makes him their father. He is their father only if they live following the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
13
KJV : For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, [was] not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
YLT : For not through law [is] the promise to Abraham, or to his seed, of his being heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith;
RV : For not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith.
RSV : The promise to Abraham and his descendants, that they should inherit the world, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.
ASV : For not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he should be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith.
ESV : For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.
ERVEN : Abraham and his descendants received the promise that they would get the whole world. But Abraham did not receive that promise because he followed the law. He received that promise because he was right with God through his faith.
14
KJV : For if they which are of the law [be] heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
YLT : for if they who are of law [are] heirs, the faith hath been made void, and the promise hath been made useless;
RV : For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of none effect:
RSV : If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.
ASV : For if they that are of the law are heirs, faith is made void, and the promise is made of none effect:
ESV : For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.
ERVEN : If people could get God's promise by following the law, then faith is worthless. And God's promise to Abraham is worthless,
15
KJV : Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, [there is] no transgression.
YLT : for the law doth work wrath; for where law is not, neither [is] transgression.
RV : for the law worketh wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
RSV : For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.
ASV : for the law worketh wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
ESV : For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.
ERVEN : because the law can only bring God's anger on those who disobey it. But if there is no law, then there is nothing to disobey.
16
KJV : Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
YLT : Because of this [it is] of faith, that [it may be] according to grace, for the promise being sure to all the seed, not to that which [is] of the law only, but also to that which [is] of the faith of Abraham,
RV : For this cause {cf15i it is} of faith, that {cf15i it may be} according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
RSV : That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants -- not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all,
ASV : For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace; to the end that the promise may be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
ESV : That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring- not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
ERVEN : So people get what God promised by having faith. This happens so that the promise can be a free gift. And if the promise is a free gift, then all of Abraham's people will get that promise. The promise is not just for those who live under the Law of Moses. It is for all who live with faith as Abraham did. He is the father of us all.

ESV : as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations"- in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.
ERVEN : As the Scriptures say, "I have made you a father of many nations." This is true before God, the one Abraham believed— the God who gives life to the dead and speaks of things that don't yet exist as if they are real.
18

ESV : In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, "So shall your offspring be."
ERVEN : There was no hope that Abraham would have children, but Abraham believed God and continued to hope. And that is why he became the father of many nations. As God told him, "You will have many descendants."
19
KJV : And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb:
YLT : and not having been weak in the faith, he did not consider his own body, already become dead, (being about a hundred years old,) and the deadness of Sarah`s womb,
RV : And without being weakened in faith he considered his own body now as good as dead (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah-s womb:
RSV : He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.
ASV : And without being weakened in faith he considered his own body now as good as dead (he being about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarahs womb;
ESV : He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead ( since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.
ERVEN : Abraham was almost a hundred years old, so he was past the age for having children. Also, Sarah could not have children. Abraham was well aware of this, but his faith in God never became weak.
20
KJV : He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

KJV : Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
