1
KJV : So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of [such as were] oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors [there was] power; but they had no comforter.
YLT : And I have turned, and I see all the oppressions that are done under the sun, and lo, the tear of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and at the hand of their oppressors [is] power, and they have no comforter.
RV : Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter.
RSV : Again I saw all the oppressions that are practiced under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.
ASV : Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and, behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
ESV : Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.
ERVEN : Again I saw that many people are treated badly. I saw their tears, and I saw that there was no one to comfort them. I saw that cruel people had all the power, and I saw that there was no one to comfort the people they hurt.
2
KJV : Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
YLT : And I am praising the dead who have already died above the living who are yet alive.
RV : Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive;
RSV : And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive;
ASV : Wherefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive;
ESV : And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive.
ERVEN : I decided that it is better for those who have died than for those who are still alive.
3
KJV : Yea, better [is he] than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
YLT : And better than both of them [is] he who hath not yet been, in that he hath not seen the evil work that hath been done under the sun.
RV : yea, better than them both {cf15i did I esteem} him which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
RSV : but better than both is he who has not yet been, and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.
ASV : yea, better than them both did I esteem him that hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
ESV : But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.
ERVEN : And it is even better for those who die at birth, because they never saw the evil that is done in this world.

KJV : Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This [is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.
YLT : And I have seen all the labour, and all the benefit of the work, because for it a man is the envy of his neighbour. Even this [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.
RV : Then I saw all labour and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
RSV : Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
ASV : Then I saw all labor and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
ESV : Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man's envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
ERVEN : Then I thought, "Why do people work so hard?" I saw people try to succeed and be better than other people. They do this because they are jealous. They don't want other people to have more than they have. This is senseless. It is like trying to catch the wind.
5

KJV : Better [is] an handful [with] quietness, than both the hands full [with] travail and vexation of spirit.
YLT : `Better [is] a handful [with] quietness, than two handfuls [with] labour and vexation of spirit.`
RV : Better is an handful with quietness, than two handfuls with labour and striving after wind.
RSV : Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
ASV : Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and striving after wind.
ESV : Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
ERVEN : Maybe that is true. But I say it is better to be satisfied with the few things you have than to always be struggling to get more.
7

8
KJV : There is one [alone,] and [there is] not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet [is there] no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither [saith he,] For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This [is] also vanity, yea, it [is] a sore travail.
YLT : There is one, and there is not a second; even son or brother he hath not, and there is no end to all his labour! His eye also is not satisfied with riches, and [he saith not], `For whom am I labouring and bereaving my soul of good?` This also is vanity, it is a sad travail.
RV : There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, {cf15i saith he}, do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
RSV : a person who has no one, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, "For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?" This also is vanity and an unhappy business.
ASV : There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, saith he, do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
ESV : one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, "For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?" This also is vanity and an unhappy business.
ERVEN : I saw a man who has no family, not a son or even a brother. But he continues to work very hard. He is never satisfied with what he has. And he works so hard that he never stops and asks himself, "Why am I working so hard? Why don't I let myself enjoy my life?" This is also a very bad and senseless thing.

ESV : Better was a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice.
ERVEN : A young leader who is poor but wise is better than a king who is old but foolish. That old king does not listen to warnings.
14
