ಯೆಹೋವನು ಇಸ್ರೇಲರನ್ನು ಈಜಿಪ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಬಿಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದಿದ್ದನು. ಅವರ ಪೂರ್ವಿಕರು ಯೆಹೋವನನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಇಸ್ರೇಲರು ಯೆಹೋವನನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸದೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಜನರ ಸುಳ್ಳುದೇವರುಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಯೆಹೋವನಿಗೆ ಕೋಪ ಬಂತು.
